Colonel John M. Cosgrove currently serves as the 177th Vice Commander, 177th Fighter Wing, New Jersey Air National Guard.  The Wing’s mission is to provide and sustain combat-ready forces supporting both federal and state missions. As Vice Commander, he assists the Wing Commander in organizing, training and equipping a 4 group, 10 squadron wing who flies Lockheed Martin F-16C+ aircraft.  The 177th Fighter Wing is a reserve component of the Air Force’s Air Combat Command.  


Col. Cosgrove received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy in 1992 where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Mechanics.  He attended Undergraduate Pilot Training at Columbus AFB, MS in July of 1992.  Upon UPT graduation, Col. Cosgrove flew the C-9 at Scott AFB until 1997.  He transitioned to the C-141 at McGuire AFB where he served in a variety of flying duties to include safety officer, scheduler, Chief of Tactics, and Special Operations Low-Level (SOLL2) pilot.  Col. Cosgrove is a senior pilot with over 2,500 flying hours including contingency sorties in support of Operation Southern Watch.


Col. Cosgrove joined the New Jersey Air National Guard in 2006 as a Civil Engineer at the 177th Fighter Wing.  In 2010, Col. Cosgrove became the Director of Operations for the 227th Air Support Operations Squadron.  Prior to his assignment as Vice Wing Commander, he served as 177th Maintenance Group Commander.
